Jablonec nad Nisou, with nearly 50 000 inhabitants, is the administrative, cultural, and sports-recreation centre of the Jizera Mountains. The first reference to Jablonec dates back to 1356, but the place was not permanently settled until the 16th century. Fundamental changes occurred in the development of the town in the 2nd half of the 17th century. It was at this time that glassmaking began its rapid development and proved that Jablonec had a favourable position from which to trade. Jablonec was elevated to market town status in 1808 and became a town in 1866 upon the decree of Emperor Franz Josef I. By that time Jablonec was trading with the whole world. And what is Jablonec like today? It is again a town of glassmaking and costume jewellery production, a town of sport and the gateway to the Jizera Mountains. What is here in the town to attract tourists?
The museum and its exhibition rooms present visitors with a selection from a unique collection of glass and metal costume jewellery and artistic jewellery from Jablonec that numbers hundreds of thousands of beads, buttons and other clothing accessories and a high quality collection of historic and contemporary Bohemian artistic glass.
The theatre ceremonially opened its doors on 21st September 1907.
